Anwar Hadi Ramli is a full time theatre practitioner / educator and an award winning playwright. Anwar has worked in the theatre industry with professional companies since 1996. He was content with working in the industry on a part time basis until the year 2003 when he decided to make it a full time career. For a while, he took a turn to the civil service in 2004 and was with the National Library Board for two years before making a full u-turn back to theatre in 2006.
Anwar performs, writes and directs theatre productions with companies such as Teater Kami, Teater Ekamatra, Teater Artistik, Sriwana, Act3 Theatrics to name a few. Currently he is a drama trainer at Republic Polytechnic.
His recent works include "Gentarasa 2012 / Bagaimana Kalau Gentar Gegarannya" (What if, Tremulous) which he wrote and directed, was staged at the Kallang Theatre in 2012. Another recent writing was "MERdEKAnya KITA" (Our Independence) which was staged by Teater Kami Ltd as part of their South-east Asia tour in Singapore and Jakarta but was controversially banned in Malaysia.
In 2017 his play "The (Assumed) Vicious Cycle of a (Melayu) Youth" won the best drama (theatre) script in the bi-annual Anugerah Persuratan, the highest national level honour for Malay Literature by the Malay Language Council of Singapore.
Other than theatre, Anwar appears on television programmes and was also featured in 2 films; “Kallang Roar the Movie (2008)” and “Blood Ties (2009)” which were screened in local cinemas.
